Hello, October

Hello, October. I've been waiting for you. Waiting for a certain shift of the light, waiting for temperatures to drop just a little. But not too much.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

Goodbye, September. You were a warm, colorful month, bringing crisp, cool weather, the kind that matches the fantasy of a perfect autumn day. You taught me a few lessons. You reminded me that the changing seasons are beyond our control, but not beyond our longing, not beyond our imagination. The best part of fall is receiving gifts that each day holds. Sometimes these gifts are fleeting, just for us, for this moment. If this isn't magic, I don't know what is.
Glad you came to the party. Last week was phenomenal, packed with ideas and beauty. Your posts are like staycations, where I can enjoy autumn recipes and decor. Here are a few highlights from our previous party:

Use natural elements to create a fabulous DIY fall wreath at Home Is Where the Boat Is.

You'll enjoy fall entertaining ideas by Living with Thanksgiving.

What's for supper? Try "Skillet Bacon Cheeseburger Pasta" by What's Cooking in the Burbs.

Enjoy an early autumn evening at Everyday Living.

Cozy up with a warm, elegant throw at A Stroll Thru Life.

Finding Joy in the Potting Shed

The potting shed has a long and interesting history, dating back to 2013.  She began as an anniversary shed, a gift to my husband and myself, two intrepid gardeners with two different mindsets. I dreamed of a Country Living type space, and my husband envisioned something utilitarian, where grass seed was stored in twisted sacks and muddy tools could be hung on the wall.

The Underporch: Part 3

The Underporch is an outdoor space at our house. Literally, it's a porch beneath a porch. Above, you'll find a 2nd floor screened porch. Below, you'll find the Underporch.

The Underporch: Part 2

The Underporch has a story to tell. Like most tales, this one has a beginning and a middle, but thankfully, it lacks an ending. After all, this is a decorating story, and we don't want closure, with the room stuck in Autumn. The room looks forward to Thanksgiving and Christmas. It may even look forward to winter.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

Happy Autumn Equinox, the first day of fall. Between you and me, it sure feels like summer. This morning, I replaced a few (dead/fried) plants with vivid and (hopefully) hardy Coreopsis, and within minutes I was completely drenched. But it was worth it.

Autumn Nesting

This is my first September on the hilltop, and I'm watching everything. Birds, clouds, leaves, the moon. The days are hot and humid, but evening arrives with crisp edges, sometimes with fog. The atmospheric change is abrupt, as if I have stepped down into a cool, damp cellar.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

Welcome to Foodie Friday and Everything Else. Can you believe it's mid-September? Today was hot and dry, but the changing light tells me that crisp weather is on the way. I enjoy seeing autumn photos on Instagram--some places are beginning to look like true fall, and other places are like mine, summery but not.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

Welcome to Foodie Friday and Everything Else. Just come on in and make yourselves at home. Hope you had a great Labor Day weekend. We drove to the Great Smokey Mountains and did a little hiking, exploring, and eating.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

Hello, September. And hello to all of you--welcome to Foodie Friday and Everything Else. Over the last few days, I've noticed how the quality of light has shifted and deepened. It pours over everything like warm pear juice, and suddenly I'm in the mood to roll out dough and dust off my Crockpot.

Foodie Friday and Everything Else

A sudden thunderstorm is moving in, and that almost always means that our Internet will be knocked out. I want to make sure Foodie Friday and Everything Else is available to you right now, just in case our cable is hit. If we escape, I'll come back later and add the features--which were spectacular, I might add.
(Update: The storm passed, and we still have Internet service. With pleasure, I'm adding features from last week's party.)

Blueberry Bread

Here lately, I've been baking like crazy. Some recipes aren't successful, like my tomato cake, which went off-script in a wild sort of way, and I'm still working on on a solution; other recipes involve a store-bought mix, which is pretty hard to mess up. One successful baking project involved fat, plump blueberries and the aforementioned mix.

The City Baker's Guide to Country Living with The Novel Bakers

Who can resist a novel that opens with baked Alaska and a flambeed restaurant? I wouldn't even try! I was smitten the moment I read the first sentence to The City Baker's Guide to Country Living, a debut novel by Louise Miller:
The night I lit the Emerson Club on fire had been perfect for making meringue.

Alfresco Tablescape Bloghop

On this sweet, summer afternoon, I decided to serve an early supper on the porch. I was inspired by a lively blue and green tablecloth, just the antidote for a hot August day.
